Workshop on sustainable artisanal fisheries management

On the 26th of February 2010, the PRESPO project, through Centro de Experimentación Pesquera de Asturias, in collaboration with the University of Oviedo (Spain) organized a workshop on artisanal fisheries entitled “Workshop on sustainable artisanal fisheries management”. The workshop took place at the Aquarium de Gijón, where 87 from Spain, France, Portugal and Chile, participated. The audience comprised a wider range of entities and stakeholder groups, namely representatives of fishermen organizations (16), fisheries experts (16), representatives from fisheries management authorities (19) and university students and professors (30) an other people related to fisheries management (6). The aim of this meeting was to bring together key stakeholders to debate which strategies should be adopted for the suitable management of artisanal fisheries. The event was divided into two sessions. The first session, in the morning, was devoted to the management of artisanal fisheries, where each country/region represented in the workshopthe management model implemented in the artisanal fisheries.At the end it was promoted a debate on the pros and cons in adopting certain technical measures in the management of artisanal fisheries, and how the lack of information on artisanal fisheries impedes the sustainable management of these fisheries. In the second session, in the afternoon, it was discussed the importance of creating an Observatory of Artisanal Fisheries as a strategic tool for the management of artisanal fisheries, as proposed in the PRESPO proyect.
